I have to keep reminding myself that we aren't in England and that everyone smiles at each other here, and just because someone is smiling at you it doesn't mean that they want anything from you or are a bit strange, it's just that they are generally really friendly, trusting people. Perhaps it's because it's such a new country and doesn't have all the mistrust and grumpyness that seems to come with being English (or in fact European). As I like smiling at people it's great that people smile back, although occasionally it is nice to slip back into a bit of UK grumpyness and not smile at anyone for a while.
I think we may move on from Gisborne in a couple of days. I can't say I have really bonded with the place it's an odd town and as I said before it's a bit empty. Next stop Mahia peninsula and hopefully a tonne of kids.
Thanks for all your comments on the last post it was lovely to hear from you all and we love you all lots. Grandma Lynne how about we schedule a call at 9pm your time tomorrow that's 10am our time the following day?
Poor William.....not poor William because he had to have a tooth out, but poor William because he can't eat because of it! We know how much he likes his food. It must be hell for him. I hope you are giving him lots of care and attention. Maybe not. It must be strange not to see lots of people out Xmas shopping etc. Of course, I haven't seen lots of people out Xmas shopping either, because we have been snowed in. And yesterday, though we had no snow, The Furlong was one long mass of ice. The other day the Sainsbury's delivery van got stuck trying to turn round, and yesterday, Adie returned some stuff to us from the Croker's house (because they move down to Dorset tomorrow) and he also got stuck trying to turn. Wheels just skid on the ice. Today it is melting, but its supposed to snow again tomorrow. The weight of the snow, sliding off the roof and landing on the top of the Pergola, plus all the snow that was on there anyway, has brought down a lot of the matting top that was on it. We'll have to have it taken down properly soon.
ReplyDeleteGot a message from Kerry today, who thought you were delightful! But I knew that anyway!
Love and hugs,
Mum
Glad people are still friendly, even if a little quiet. Haven't spent much time in Gisborne myself, can imagine it may be hard to warm to. Are you planning any time on the coromandel peninsula? Realise it is in the wrong direction for you, but that is just a wonderful place to be. Hahei, cathedral cove, and coromandel itself for some hippiness, will be very busy after christmas though. But lots of kids for Sam to play with!
ReplyDeleteAnd what about the south island? Get yourself to Nelson and north, you MUST visit the Abel tasman national park (although it is probably crap for surf!)
Our surfing friends live up on the north island near kerikeri. Let me know if you want directions for some good beaches!
